The Groupe International de Reserche sur l’Enseignement de la Physique (GIREP) takes the opportunity to remember its dear member Sara Roberta Barbieri who passed away in 2021. Sara has always put great passion and dedication to improve the teaching of physics, especially through laboratory experiments with simple and inexpensive materials. She also worked to improve the involvement of students to better develop their personality through the co-design of conceptual, aesthetic, and artistic tools connected to scientific reasoning.
In collaboration with the Barbieri family, the GIREP created an award to be conferred to teachers – schools of any type and countries – that have carried out an active learning physics didactic project developed by experiments built with poor materials.
The amount of the prize is set at 1000 (one thousand) Euros.
The project has to be presented by a teacher, or by a group of teachers who have carried it out in strict collaboration, and must have an innovative and possibly also a research nature
have been conducted by the teacher (or by the group of teachers) making explicit reference to the work done with the students.
The activity carried out must be documented by a report, written in English, describing:
1) the topic addressed, its importance and its place in relation to the school context and the didactic needs;
2) the objectives;
3) the innovative and research nature of the project
4) the methods of carrying it out, with explicit indication of phases, activities, teaching methodologies, tools, and times;
5) the criteria and methods for evaluating pupils’ learning together with the effectiveness of the didactic intervention;
6) the reference bibliography;
7) any collaborations (with other teachers, universities, museums, etc.) and their respective roles in the project described.
Teachers interested in the Prize must upload, by February 20th of each year, two files by means of the fields at the end of this page.
The files to upload are:
File 1) Application for participation in the competition containing
- surname and name, place and date of birth
- citizenship, residential address;
- service status, school, subject of teaching;
- address complete with e-mail address;
- the title of the submitted Project
- Declaration that the submitted project activity has not already been funded by public or private entities and that it has been carried out independently or with the collaborations specified in in the n.7 above list.
File 2) A research report as a pdf file not exceeding 40000 characters including spaces.
The prize is awarded upon the judgment of a scientific commission composed of: 3 GIREP members
Evaluation criteria (see the Evaluation Grid) are:
- the correspondence of the research to the aims of the initiative and to the provisions of this announcement;
- the originality, interest and scientific value of the proposal;
- the usefulness for school.
The judgment of the Scientific Commission is unquestionable.
The prize will be awarded on the occasion of the GIREP annual Conference.

The author who will be awarded the prize will be invited (fee free) to present the work at the GIREP conference of the same year in which s/he won the prize and to write a paper about her/his work for the Proceedings of the Conference. Moreover s/he will also be offered one year of free GIREP membership.
